Beyond Fair Trade:
GiveHalf Cafe supports fair trade coffee initiatives. We sell only fair trade organic coffee and believe that the underlying principles that are driving the movement are making a difference. We however want to do much more…
The Fair Trade movement links farmer-run cooperatives directly with US importers cutting out middle men and guaranteeing farmers a set minimum price for their coffee. The buyer pays a minimum price for the green beans (currently $1.21) along with an extra 10 cent premium which goes into a fund to be used for development in coffee growing areas. This has produced a lot of good but often you the consumer don’t get to see how that money is used. While GiveHalf Café will continue to contribute to fair trade initiatives our real focus is our commitment to directly fight poverty through funding of wells in Ethiopia and showing you exactly how your purchases help.
We are also actively pursuing direct trade for sourcing our coffee beans. This allows us to pay even more than the fair trade rate for our coffee, while at the same time haveing closer relationships with the farmers themselves. Our ability to get to direct trade is based on volume, so we need your help. The more coffee you buy the quicker we’ll get to our goal.
